Russian-Chinese scientific expedition on the Akademik Boris Petrov research vehicle along the North Sea Route is completed

The research of the International Scientific Expedition in the seas of the Russian Arctic was aimed at identifying the peculiarities of functioning of the geosystems 'lithosphere–cryosphere–hydrosphere–atmosphere' of the Arctic seas of Russia under the conditions of modern climatic changes.

24 November 2024

The route of the expedition passed through the seas of the Russian Arctic: Pechora, Kara, Laptev, East Siberian, as well as the western sector of the Chukchi Sea. Several groups (detachments) of scientists and specialists from various scientific organisations from Russia and China worked on board the ship, according to the Korabel.ru portal.

The hydrologists were to perform oceanological soundings along the ship's route and at selected polygons, study the thermohaline structure and water dynamics in the Kara Sea, the Laptev Sea and the East Siberian Sea in September–October 2024.

On the basis of the materials obtained as a result of soundings covering the entire water column of the shelf (depths along the ship route did not exceed 50 m), the vertical structure of temperature and salinity of seawater and optical properties of the surface layer of the sea along the ship's motion was studied.

A total of 76 soundings were made at 36 stations during the cruise and 615,718 temperature and salinity measurements were made. The results obtained were compared with the materials of similar expeditions carried out in the seas of the Russian Arctic earlier.

The most interesting result of the conducted research was the established fact of anomalous desalination of the surface layer caused by an unusually large area of the Lena River plume spreading during the research period, recorded in the Laptev Sea and the East Siberian Sea. For the first time, an anomalously low salinity of 20 PES was recorded to the north of the Novosibirsk Islands.

It is noteworthy that the Akademik Boris Petrov was the last in the navigation-2024 to return in mid-October, without the help of icebreakers. This made it possible to complete the expedition in due time and safely return to the port of Murmansk.
