The Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic will update the development strategy for the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation.

16 November 2024

The Arctic zone development strategy was decided to be updated. This instruction was given by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin at the end of the strategic session on the development of the Arctic, Sever-Press reports.

'Until 20 May 2025, the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic has been instructed to prepare proposals to update the strategy for the development of the Arctic zone of Russia,' the report says. The other assignment concerns the navy. By 1 June, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will develop a repair programme for ships used in the Arctic.

Russia will also regulate at the legislative level the issue of resettlement of citizens who live in almost empty apartment buildings. Proposals are expected from the Ministry of Construction and the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic by 20 May 2025.

In Russia, experts from the Arctic regions have advocated recognising polar bears entering populated areas as an emergency situation. Thanks to such a measure, the authorities will be able to respond quickly to such situations and attract the necessary resources.
