NAFI: one in four Russians plans to visit the Arctic in 2025
According to the analytical centre's research findings, 13% of respondents are interested in tourist trips, 8% are considering relocating for work or study and 4% are planning business visits.
9 December 2024The NAFI Analytical Centre, supported by the Council for the Development of the Far East, Arctic and Antarctic at the Federation Council, conducted a study which revealed that one in four Russians plans to visit the Arctic in 2025. This is stated in the study available to TASS.
'The Arctic's potential is also reflected in Russians' intentions to visit these regions. Thus, one in four people plans to visit the Arctic in 2025: 13% are interested in tourist trips, 8% are considering relocation for work or study and 4% are planning business visits, including rotational work assignments,' the survey results indicate.
According to the data, Russians have relatively little knowledge about the Arctic territory. Over 90% are unfamiliar with the full list of Russian regions that belong to this zone. Some associate the Arctic only with the Murmansk and Arkhangelsk Regions, Yamal-Nenets and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Areas, while others mistakenly include the Kamchatka and Khabarovsk Territories. Moreover, 29% of respondents cannot name a single Arctic region. Russians aged 35 to 44 and one in five Arctic residents (18%) show a particularly low level of awareness.
About 46% of respondents had encountered information about the Arctic in the media in recent months. The information predominantly covers environmental issues (37%), manufacturing and industry (36%), and national security and defence (30%). Additionally, one in five Russians came across materials related to tourism or incentive programmes, such as the Hectare in the Arctic programme (23% and 22% respectively).
