The Head of Chukotka Autonomous Area informed President Vladimir Putin about the support for traditional industries during a meeting in Anadyr.

16 January 2024

From 1 February this year, workers in traditional industries in Chukotka will see an increase in their salaries. The average wage for reindeer herders will see a 50% increase, while seafarers will see a 20% increase. As a result, salaries will increase by 1.5 times for reindeer herders and 1.2 times for seafarers. The decision to increase wages was made by the Governor of the Chukotka Autonomous Area, Vladislav Kuznetsov, as reported by the press service of the Government of the Chukotka AA.

'Reindeer herders and seafarers earn low wages considering the hard work they do. These working conditions discourage young people, who often opt for other professions. These industries form the foundation of the traditional lifestyle and are integral to the daily life of indigenous peoples. Increasing wages in these industries will make them more appealing to potential specialists. We are keen on attracting new personnel to these professions,' stated Vladislav Kuznetsov.

Supporting reindeer herding and seafaring contributes to the economic development of the county, according to the governor. These products are not only popular in the local market but also in other regions of Russia. Workshops for processing and storing reindeer and seal products are currently being established in the district.
