The issue of creating a national project was raised by the Arctic Development Working Group.

There is an overdue need in Russia for a national project to develop the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. This issue was brought up at a meeting of the working group on regional development under the State Council of the Russian Federation. This is reported by the Sever Press portal.

"For the first time, we are raising the issue of prioritizing the Arctic in presidential national projects, similar to the Far East," stated Andrey Chibis, chairman of the working group and governor of the Murmansk Region.

The project concept includes three main directions: "national security", "accelerated economic development", and "high quality of life". It also encompasses "cross-cutting" areas such as transport infrastructure, technology and innovation, digitalization and communications. The project is tentatively titled Support Settlements of the Russian Arctic — a Strategic Priority.

Now is a good time for its development, as in late December 2023, Mikhail Mishustin, Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, announced plans to update existing national projects, set to be completed by the year's end. The results of their revision should be finalized by June 2024.
