Yamal plans to expand support measures for orphaned children from indigenous minorities
Young men and women will be able to take advantage of the support measures when they reach the age of majority and prove that they lead a traditional way of life of small indigenous minorities of the North.
12 September 2024From the beginning of the next year, orphans and children without parental care, leading a traditional way of life of indigenous peoples of the North, are planned to be provided with a full set of everything necessary for nomadic life. This was reported by the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area regional government's press service.
Young Yamal residents will be able to receive a set consisting of 23 items. It is planned to include coverings for chums, poles, a stove, cloth, materials for nets, a first aid kit, a satellite phone, a mini power station, a chainsaw and other necessary items.
Currently, each orphaned child leading a nomadic lifestyle is provided with only poles for the chum, winter and summer tents, a stove and 30 reindeer. The new bill will significantly expand and enhance support, making it more effective for novice reindeer herders. A significant innovation will be the provision of an electronic certificate for the purchase of reindeer. Its nominal value will correspond to the average cost of 30 adult individuals.
'The digital format of assistance will allow individuals to independently choose and purchase reindeer of the desired sex and age from specialised organisations and enterprises. The number of animals available to the certificate holder will also depend on their selection. Currently, reindeer are issued in municipalities without considering the preferences of future owners,' noted Alexander Krasheninnikov.
