Tourists in the Polar Urals to be protected from mountain emergencies
Yamal scientists will draw up a plan for safe hiking trails in the Polar Urals.
1 November 2024Yamal scientists will create a map of safe mountain trails for tourists travelling in the Polar Urals. This was reported to Sever-Press by Ekaterina Koroleva, senior researcher of the cryosphere sector of the Arctic Research Centre. Scientists discussed the topic of permafrost at the 12th International Symposium on Permafrost Engineering in China.
'A new topic of permafrost has emerged in connection with plans to develop tourism in Yamal. Hazardous processes can occur in the mountains. We have a warming climate. It is possible to develop these processes in connection with anthropogenic load. The safety of tourists is important to us. We have developed a set of measures for the safety of tourists. So that there were no rockslides, mudslides, so that hiking trails passed in safe places,' Koroleva told the press centre.
She said scientists need to designate places in the mountains where, for example, avalanches are possible. 'The Polar Urals are poorly studied. Scientists are working, but in a very pinpointed way. It is important for us to cover the whole area and to mark the danger spots in the first phase. Based on this, recommendations will be made,' Koroleva explained.
Tourism experts believe that travelling to Yamal may be of interest to adventure seekers. There are natural points in the region that are available for all-season visitation.
