The list of key Arctic locations to serve as project bases has been expanded
The Polyarnye Zori city in the Murmansk Region and the Bilibinsky municipal district of the Chukotka Autonomous Area have been added to the list.
15 August 2024The Russian government has broadened the list of key settlements in the Arctic zone, which will serve as hubs for economic and infrastructure projects. Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed the corresponding order, according to TASS.
'Two municipalities have been added to the list. These are the Polyarnye Zori city in the Murmansk Region and the Bilibinsky municipal district of the Chukotka Autonomous Area,' the Cabinet's website stated.
The Cabinet explained that these locations are situated near mineral deposits and will become centres for developing mineral resources, supporting the advancement of the metallurgical industry. Additionally, strategically significant projects will be implemented in these areas.
The list of key Arctic settlements was approved by the government in November 2023, following a directive from the Russian President. It encompassed 16 agglomerations from 9 regions.
