The governor of the Arkhangelsk Region proposed the creation of a shipyard for constructing vessels for the Arctic.

Mr. Tsybulsky also pointed out that the Arctic fleet needs to be updated.

During a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Arkhangelsk, Governor Alexander Tsybulsky suggested creating a new shipyard for producing Arctic-class vessels to operate on the Northern Sea Route. Severodvinsk is being considered as a potential site for the production. This was reported by TASS.

"All experts agree <…> that we need to build another shipyard on par with Zvezda, capable of building large-capacity [vessels]. <…> There's a location in Severodvinsk in South Yagry, which, among other ones, in 2013 was considered for the location of Novatek's project, which ended up being built in Murmansk. The conditions here are very good. And I want to mention that we're also working with [federal] ministries and potential investors to establish the shipyard here," said the governor.

The site is near the Zvezdochka ship repair yard, and the canal dimensions allow for the passage of large-capacity vessels.

Tsybulsky pointed out that the Arctic fleet needs updating. Over the past 20 years, 580 ships have been decommissioned and only 224 commissioned.
