Tens of thousands of tourists to visit Yamal this winter
Yamal's annual tourist flow is growing by about 10%.
12 December 2024The winter season is set to be record-breaking for Yamal's tourism industry. Over 65,000 travellers are expected to visit the region, known for its northern landscapes and rich cultural heritage. This was reported by the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area regional government's press service.
Guests will have the opportunity to chase the northern lights, trek across snow-covered tundra and meet nomadic families to learn about ancient Nenets traditions and sample authentic local cuisine.
'Yamal is unique in that it has preserved the traditional culture and ethnicity of its northern indigenous peoples. This is what attracts a large number of travellers from across the country to the region. The average annual hotel occupancy in the district is about 30%, indicating significant potential for increasing tourist numbers. We expect more than 65,000 travellers to visit the region this winter season,' noted Irina Gryaznova, Deputy Director of the YNAA Department of Economics.
This year, the Polar Urals Tourism Development Centre has collaborated with tour operators to create winter itineraries that will allow guests to explore the region and enjoy a rich, comfortable journey: 'Yamal—Glow of the Tundra,' 'First Time on the Arctic Circle' and 'Into the Wilds of the Tundra.' The tour programme can be found on the website.
The tourist flow is expected to reach 280,000 people by the end of 2024.
