Scientists have compiled an integrated catalog of earthquakes in the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation.

The catalog contains information on 45,793 seismic events from 1962 to 2022 and is freely available on the World Data Centre for Solid Earth Physics website.

Seismic hazard of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation was studied by a joint team of scientists from the Geophysical Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Earthquake Prediction Theory and Mathematical Geophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This was reported by the press service of the Government of the Arkhangelsk Region.

The outcome of their work was the creation of an integrated earthquake catalog for the mid-oceanic ridges Gakkel and Knipovich, as well as the Svalbard archipelago. Such a catalog is essential for analyzing and studying seismic activity.

The compiled earthquake catalog for the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation combines data on earthquakes from regional catalogs of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Yakutiya, North-East Russia, Kamchatka, the Arctic, East European Craton, and Svalbard), the regional catalog of the seismic network of N. Laverov Federal Centre for Integrated Arctic Research of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the regional catalog of the western sector of the AZRF, and data from the International Seismological Centre.

A unique feature of the developed mathematical apparatus is its ability to very accurately distinguish between duplicate events and aftershocks. This is a particularly challenging task as both types of events occur close in space and time.
