Rosatom: Preparations are underway to review the Great North Sea Route project

The length of this transport corridor will be 8,000 nautical miles.

9 August 2024

As part of the development of the Efficient Transport System project, preparations are underway to review and approve the federal project for the development of the Great North Sea Route, as instructed by the President. This was announced by Vladimir Panov, Rosatom State Corporation's Special Representative for Arctic Development and Deputy Chairman of the State Commission for Arctic Development, to the correspondent of IA PortNews.

Vladimir Panov reminded that the boundaries of the North Sea Route are defined in the Merchant Shipping Code. It spans 3,000 nautical miles from Novaya Zemlya to the Bering Strait.

'Arkhangelsk itself lies outside the North Sea Route's waters. Consequently, all cargo traffic along the North Sea Route either begins or ends beyond its boundaries. This raised the question of how to name this route to avoid any misunderstanding. We proposed a new name—the Great North Sea Route. The federal project sets an ambitious goal: to consider a transport corridor from St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad to Vladivostok. This spans 8,000 nautical miles,' explained Vladimir Panov.

According to him, new tasks and objectives will be established within this transport corridor.
