Rosatom predicts record transit shipments via the NSR

The expected volume is around 3 mn tons of transit cargo.

6 June 2024

In 2024, Rosatom plans to transport 3 mn tons of transit cargo via the North Sea Route. Vladimir Panov, the corporation's special representative for the Arctic, announced this information, as reported by Interfax.

Previously, Panov reported that in 2023, transit shipments reached a record high of 2.1 mn tons, with oil being the primary transit cargo for the first time.

In 2024, total cargo traffic through the NSR is expected to hit 71 mn tons, significantly surpassing previous years' figures of 36.254 mn in 2023 and 34 mn in 2022. The eastern sector of the North Sea Route is set to transition to year-round navigation for high-ice-class vessels by 2024.

The three primary types of cargo traffic on the North Sea Route include shipments from the Gulf of Ob and Yenisei Bay; coastal shipping to support Arctic investment projects and northern imports; and transit cargoes involving ships with ports of loading and unloading outside the NSR.
