OSK has commenced mooring tests on the Yakutia nuclear icebreaker
Following the completion of mooring tests, the icebreaker will proceed to sea trials.
8 May 2024At the Baltic Shipyard of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, mooring trials have begun for the third serial universal nuclear icebreaker Yakutia under Project 22220. The OSK's press service reported on this.
Specialists will assess the functionality of the nuclear vessel's systems and mechanisms, check the installation quality of onboard equipment and calibrate devices. These activities are conducted at the shipyard's fitting-out quay following specific programmes and methodologies.
During mooring trials, significant work focuses on the icebreaker's main power unit. Its core consists of two integral type RITM-200 water-water nuclear reactors, each with a thermal output of 175 MW.
Before evaluating the main power plant, tests on auxiliary mechanisms servicing it, electrical equipment and various emergency systems have started. To conserve auxiliary mechanisms during tests, the vessel receives electricity, steam, compressed air, etc., from shore-based sources.
During mooring trials, equipment in all ship compartments will be inspected and approved, compartments tested for airtightness and emergency rescue gear checked.
