Nornickel has updated its policy for interacting with indigenous minorities
The company first adopted a policy regarding the rights of indigenous peoples in 2018. In 2021, Nornickel added the principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) to its operations. Policy 2024, in turn, takes into account all relevant Russian and international standards.
17 September 2024The Board of Directors of Nornickel approved an updated policy on engagement with indigenous peoples. The document was developed with the participation of independent experts and in consultation with indigenous communities and associations. In it, the company has taken into account international standards, UN guidelines and best practices, and has included algorithms for engaging with indigenous peoples in various situations, due diligence activities and the principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC). This is reported by the company's press service.
According to the policy, the company acknowledges the vulnerability of indigenous minorities and their right to independently determine their development priorities, while respecting their dignity, history, uniqueness, traditions and heritage. Nornickel conducts consultations with indigenous minorities during its investment and operational activities.
It is expected that an independent audit of the implementation of the policy provisions, agreements and programmes developed with the participation and in the interests of indigenous minorities will be conducted every three years. Provision is made for the implementation of an independent grievance mechanism.
