An aerial survey of wild reindeer was conducted on the Taimyr Peninsula

The aerial survey results will not only establish current population numbers but also predict future trends.

24 July 2024

The aerial survey began in early July. The survey is conducted by scientific experts from the federal hunting research centre, the regional Ministry of Natural Resources, federal reserves and indigenous observers from northern communities. The media office of the Krasnoyarsk Territory Government reported the news on the project.

For two weeks, researchers in seaplanes flew over the area, recording reindeer groups using GPS and photography. The survey aims to identify wild reindeer concentration areas and assess their numbers, sex ratios and age structure.

'Thank you to all expedition participants for their excellent work! I should mention that indigenous people warmly welcomed us at camps throughout our flights. Ahead of us lies an equally important stage—processing the collected data. The research findings will inform strategies for sustainable management of the Taimyr-Evenki wild reindeer population,' commented Pavel Kochkarev, Director of the Central Siberian Nature Reserve.

It's worth noting that reindeer are a keystone species in the Taimyr and Evenkia ecosystem, playing a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and indigenous ways of life. Aerial population counts are vital for monitoring and sustainably managing this resource.
