Young Reindeer Herder programme to be tested in Arctic regions
The programme is designed for nomadic schools, educational organisations, boarding schools and additional education organisations located in areas inhabited by indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation.
22 October 2024The Federal Institute of Native Languages of the Peoples of the Russian Federation has developed an extracurricular activity programme 'Young Reindeer Herder' and a teacher's manual on life safety for children in nomadic conditions, which are being tested in Arctic regions. Natalia Sitnikova, director of the Institute's Yakutsk branch, told TASS.
'We have developed and are starting to test the extracurricular activity programme "Young Reindeer Herder" for primary general education, as well as a methodological manual for teachers on life safety of children from indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North in nomadic conditions. Most children of reindeer herders are educated in boarding schools; they need to know the basics of safety and reindeer husbandry skills,' Sitnikova said.
The Young Reindeer Herder programme is intended for nomadic schools, educational organisations, boarding schools and additional education organisations located in areas of traditional residence of indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation.
The methodological manual for teachers on life safety of children from indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East in nomadic conditions is addressed to primary school teachers, educators, pedagogical staff of nomadic general education organisations, boarding schools, educational schools, additional education organisations, as well as students, postgraduates, teachers of pedagogical universities and specialists dealing with education issues for children leading a nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyle with their parents.
