On 26 January 2024, the Baltic Shipyard, part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), will commence the construction of the fifth serial universal nuclear-powered icebreaker (SUNPI) from Project 22220, as reported by IA PortNews, citing the company's press service.

Currently, the North Sea Route (NSR) is being serviced by universal nuclear-powered icebreakers from Project 22220: the lead vessel Arktika (commissioned in 2020), the first in series — Sibir (commissioned in 2021) and the second in series — Ural (commissioned in 2022). Construction of the universal nuclear icebreakers Yakutia and Chukotka is currently ongoing in St. Petersburg.

In February 2023, FSUE Atomflot and the Baltic Shipyard entered into a contract for the construction of the fifth and sixth serial nuclear-powered vessels from Project 22220. The vessels were initially intended to be named Kamchatka and Sakhalin. The fifth production UNPI is slated for commissioning in December 2028, with the sixth following in December 2030.
