The concept for the long-term development programme of domestic Arctic shipbuilding involves appointing an authorised person responsible for coordinating Arctic fleet construction. This was reported by the Atomic Energy 2.0 portal.

The document was developed by Rosatom State Corporation under instruction from the Russian Government. The concept is supported by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic, the Russian government's press service reports.

The concept envisages additional mechanisms for developing the North Sea Route, aimed at increasing capacity for cargo fleet construction, the number of domestic shipyards, creating Russian-made ship components and standardising shipbuilding projects. This format of cooperation will allow domestic shipyards to build up relevant competencies in constructing such types of vessels.

Construction of additional large-capacity ice-class vessels for operation along the entire North Sea Route under the Russian flag will ensure transportation of the planned cargo base and attract additional cargo to the North Sea Route, including for redirecting transit cargo, and ensure its guaranteed transportation even in case of worsening ice conditions, the Cabinet of Ministers adds.
