ROSATOM will operate floating NPPs itself, only selling electricity to customers

Andrey Nikipelov, ROSATOM's Deputy Director General for Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Solutions, stated that the construction, fuel loading, and subsequent operation of the plants are provided by the state corporation.

ROSATOM offers a turnkey approach to potential buyers of Floating Power Units (FPU), meaning customers do not need to participate in the production and operation of the FPU. This was announced by Andrei Nikipelov, ROSATOM's Deputy Director General for Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Solutions, at the "Arctic: Present and Future" forum, as reported by TASS.

"For the customer, it doesn't matter where or how the floating unit is built. The customer is not involved in its construction. ROSATOM ensures the construction, fuel loading, and subsequent operation of the plant," Nikipelov explained.

The unit is transported to its installation site and operated for as long as the fuel campaign permits. Depending on the capacity and location conditions, it is from 5 to 10 years. Afterwards, the unit is sent back to the Russian shipyard for fuel reloading and necessary mid-life repairs. During this period, a backup floating power unit will be installed for the customer, ensuring a steady supply of electricity in the exact amount needed, as explained by ROSATOM's Deputy General Director.

"The reactor cover is never opened at the site of operation, eliminating the need for any infrastructure related to nuclear fuel reloading," Nikipelov emphasised.
