The researchers at the Institute of Petroleum and Gas Geology and Geophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have predicted that the discovery of new oil and gas fields in the Arctic Zone of Russia will increase the annual production of natural gas by one and a half times, from 100 million to 150 million cubic meters, according to a report released by the Institute.

The West Siberian petroleum basin located in the Arctic region of Russia is one of the key areas in Russia and the world in terms of oil and gas production. It includes 14 regions with identified mineral deposits and at least two more regions where the potential for oil and gas reserves has to be studied further. According to the news agency TASS, with the recently discovered fields, the current production of natural gas in this region is estimated at 100 million cubic meters.

"With the discovery of the new fields, the annual production of natural gas may exceed 150 million cubic meters," reported the Institute.

Its researchers found that the output of oil and gas reserves in the Arctic Zone may increase following the study of new territories with poor infrastructure, such as the areas in the central and northern parts of the Gyda Peninsula, the Khatanga regional trough as well as the marine area in ​​the southern part of the Kara Sea.
