Finland resumes work with Russia in the Arctic Council
The Arctic Council has been holding virtual meetings with the Russian side since this spring.
1 September 2024Russia is again taking part in the Arctic Council meetings after a long break, Delovoy Peterburg reports citing Yle TV and radio company.
This decision was made in March of this year, 2 years after the cooperation was stopped. The Arctic Council has been holding virtual meetings with the Russian side since this spring.
'We are far from the normal activities and cooperation that would allow the Arctic Council to operate at full capacity. However, a positive aspect is that the Arctic Council is functioning, capable of operating and making decisions,' noted Petteri Vuorimaki, Ambassador for Arctic and Antarctic Affairs for the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He emphasised that the meetings with Russian representatives had gone 'quite well.'
