Decommissioned nickel mine in the Polar Region is being repurposed as a tourist attraction

This refers to the Kaula-Kotselvaara mine.

1 February 2024

Kaula-Kotselvaara, one of the oldest mines in the Murmansk Region where industrial activity ceased in 2023, could potentially become a modern site for industrial tourism. A trial tour was conducted for regional authorities and tour operators at this mine, as reported by TASS, citing the Ministry of Arctic Development and Economy of the Murmansk Region.

The Kaula-Kotselvaara mine, established in the 1930s to exploit a copper-nickel ore deposit, was gradually mothballed by Nornickel in the spring of 2023 due to the depletion of ore reserves and the unprofitability of further production.

The mine is expected to soon become a key feature of the tourist cluster in the Pechenga district. The industrial component of the cluster is expected to include the Kola Superdeep, the halted float shop in the Nickel settlement, and the Kaula-Kotselvaara mine, according to the report.

An expert test visit to the Kaula-Kotselvaara mine was conducted as part of the Open Industry training programme, launched in 2023 by the Agency for Strategic Initiatives with support from the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation. The programme aims to enhance the prestige of working professions by promoting industrial tourism in various regions.
