Chukotka to double support for reindeer herder families with children
The new support measures are expected to benefit 64 families with 66 children, with payments to be transferred by 16 December this year.
3 December 2024The Chukotka Autonomous Area will increase social support for families of reindeer herders with minor children. The bill was prepared by the Government of the Chukotka Autonomous Area on the instructions of Governor Vladislav Kuznetsov. It was supported on 2 December at the meeting of the XXX session of the District Duma in Anadyr. This was reported by the press service of the Government of Chukotka Autonomous Area.
The changes apply to payments for children aged 7 to 18 who spend summer holidays on reindeer herding routes with their parents. The amount of payments will increase from RUB 11,000 to RUB 22,000 for children aged 7 to 14 and from RUB 22,000 to RUB 44,000 for children aged 14 to 18. The decision aims to maintain the traditional way of life of indigenous peoples and improve social protection for such families.
'Our goal is to preserve the unique traditions of indigenous peoples and provide decent living conditions for families who continue to maintain traditional livelihoods. Supporting reindeer herders is crucial for Chukotka's cultural heritage and ensuring the sustainable development of the local population. We are confident that this step will help children learn the skills and knowledge of their ancestors in their native environment,' emphasised Vladislav Kuznetsov, Governor of Chukotka AA.
The adopted bill will not require additional expenditure from the regional budget. Additional funds for the payment are planned to be redistributed from savings generated by other measures of the state programme 'Development of the Agro-Industrial Complex of the Chukotka Autonomous Area.'
