Yakutian programmers to create a marketplace for indigenous people of the North

Programmers from the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) will develop a digital trading platform that will enable representatives of the indigenous peoples of the North to sell goods of traditional folk crafts online.

12 September 2022

The federal budget will help this endeavour financially: funds will be allocated for it as part of the state programme for Arctic development, which also provides systematic support to indigenous minorities. The ministry is confident that the task will be accomplished, because, in 2022, the region ranked 9th in Russia-wide digital transformation rankings compiled by the Ministry of Digital Development and the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration. Alexander Stotsky, General Director of the Project Office for Arctic Development, talks about this.

A similar project, Keepers of the Arctic (arcticmarket.ru), aimed at providing indigenous craftsmen with access to global and Russian markets via the Internet, is being developed by the Project Office for Arctic Development.

The ability to operate directly, without intermediaries, in the market for traditional products is an important factor in the sustainability of indigenous communities. This is shaping the demand for traditional crafts and increasing the prestige of the work of those who have devoted their lives to them. It is also an additional source of income for talented northerners, as well as a visible incentive to develop traditional cultures.
