Permafrost Scientists Conference in Salekhard
The conference is organised with participation of the district government, the Arctic Research Centre, the Russian Centre for Arctic Development, the Institute of Institute of Physicochemical and Biological Problems of Soil Science of the RAS, and St. Petersburg State University.
1 August 2023The All-Russian Scientific and Practical Conference called Permafrost Soils in the Anthropocene will take place in the capital of Yamal from August 20 to 26. The event will host over 150 participants. The delegates include scientists, students and postgraduates from top Russian educational and research institutions. This was reported by the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area regional government's press service.
The participants can look forward to an enriching scientific and educational program. The conference agenda covers a series of discussions. Experts will deliberate on issues pertaining to the study of permafrost soils in polar regions. The emphasis will be placed on the examination of processes and phenomena that could negatively impact the functioning of engineering structures and utilities.
In Yamal, particular attention is given to studying permafrost. The region operates a geotechnical monitoring system for soil conditions. Monitoring is conducted in both urban and natural settings. Yamal scientists have set up 40 field wells. Fuel and Energy Complex companies are also contributing to this work. The district network comprises over 600 observation points.
As of August 2021, the region has established the first Russian Earth cryology and Geotechnical Safety Laboratory at the Arctic Research Centre.
