North Sea Route freight turnover to grow fivefold in the next five years

Priority will be given to activities aimed at the development of investment projects.

According to Aleksey Chekunkov, the head of the Ministry of the Eastern Economic Development of Russia, the volume of the North Sea Route (NSR) freight turnover may grow fivefold in the next five years, reports PortNews information-analytical agency with reference to the Ministry's press service.

The State Duma Committee on the Development of the Far East and the Arctic reviewed the updated versions of state programmes for the development of the Far Eastern and Arctic regions.

'Over the next five years, we expect another fivefold increase in the NSR freight turnover. Priority is given to activities aimed at the development of investment projects, NSR, as well as the environment for the lives of people living in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation,' said the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As was previously reported, the Russian government launches a mechanism for subsidising regular freight transportation along the North Sea Route. Ordinance No. 397 was signed into law on 18 March 2022.
