Ministry of Transport to examine the possibility of offering discounts on rail transport for Arctic-based industries

Vladimir Putin has ordered an investigation into potential transportation discounts for new Arctic-based industries.

5 October 2023

By December 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin expects a report on the feasibility of applying rail freight discounts for new industries in single-industry towns within the Arctic region of Russia, as reported by RIA-Novosti, citing the President's press service.

The list of directives was published following a government meeting held on 16 August 2023.

The report is to be submitted by 1 December 2023, according to the statement.

It was previously reported that JSC Russian Railways will be transporting goods in accordance with the new 'On Northern Supply' law in April 2024. Essential goods such as socially significant items, medicines, specialised therapeutic foods, fuel and more will be categorised into two groups, each receiving different priority levels during transportation. The potential for new discounts on cargo transportation for businesses in the AZRF could supplement the existing priority delivery system for Arctic regions.
