Scientists from Yamal are working on a permafrost map of the Yamal Peninsula

The 'Permafrost Map of YNAA' is being developed as part of a project aimed at forecasting permafrost degradation and automating the monitoring of frozen soil's load-bearing capacity under infrastructure projects.

Researchers from the Arctic Study Centre are working on a unique project, the 'Permafrost Map of YNAA,' which will enable the creation of a dynamically updated map of the region's permafrost conditions. This was reported by the press service of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area government.

The map will offer immediate access to data about permafrost conditions and fundamental soil properties. The map will not only contain information for the present year but also predictions for the next 50 years. Data will be uploaded to the map from specialised sensors installed throughout the district, currently numbering 71.

The map will be freely accessible to all interested parties. The information will be particularly beneficial to research institutes, educational establishments and construction companies. The map will allow for monitoring of capital construction projects and help specialists maintain stable operations of the district's energy sector, as well as civil and industrial infrastructure. It will aid in the timely development of technologies and materials for the construction of buildings and roads.
