According to research data from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI), the Barents and Kara Seas in the western part of the Russian Arctic have had their area under ice decrease. The average annual temperature here was also higher than normal, says the Krasnaya Vesna news agency.

The eastern seas (Chukchi and East Siberian), on the other hand, have demonstrated an increase in the ice coverage area: it was the highest in the last 12 years. In contrast to the western regions, temperatures here were below standard.

In the summer of 2022, a total of 10,504 mn sq. km of the Arctic Ocean were covered by ice (with the largest ice cover present in late June).

Arctic experts also note that in 2022, there has been more residual ice than before: about 20–25%.
