Arctic Council supports Russian project to preserve northern languages

It is planned to conduct interviews with native speakers of the languages of the indigenous peoples of the Arctic, collect materials from public and private archives about the linguistic and cultural heritage

Participants of the session of the Working Group on Sustainable Development (SDWG) of the Arctic Council, which takes place in Iceland on October 27-28, supported the project “Digitalization of the linguistic and cultural heritage of the indigenous peoples of the Arctic”. This was announced to TASS by Anatoly Zhozhikov, Project Manager, Head of the UNESCO International Chair “Adaptation of Society and Man in the Arctic Regions in the Context of Climate Change and Globalization”.

“The project is aimed at a broad target group - indigenous peoples living in the Arctic, youth of indigenous peoples, as well as learners of languages, culture and traditional way of life of indigenous peoples. An international multicultural Internet portal on the languages, culture and food heritage of the Arctic indigenous peoples will be created, ”Zhozhikov said.

He added that it is necessary to form an international team of participants from the Arctic states, to study the experience of preserving the linguistic and cultural heritage of the indigenous peoples of the Arctic, available in the countries of the Arctic Council.
