Novy Urengoy: flight into the future

26 декабря 2019

A large-scale modernisation is about to start in Novy Urengoy Airport. In the next few months, the existing airport complex will be reconstructed, and a new passenger terminal will be launched in 2021. Thanks to these transformations, the airport may receive an international status in the future. This is the first airport concession project in Russia.

As the development of Arctic gas reserves was picking up speed, Novy Urengoy was growing, and so was its airport. Construction of the new airport complex started in 1977; in 1980, the airport launched a runway, an administrative and passenger facility for 50 people, the first helidrome (and the second one in a few years), a repair depot for helicopters, and a specialised vehicle park.

Between 2012 and 2014, Novy Urengoy Airport had its first serious reconstruction: the buildings for arrivals and departures were connected, their linings were updated, the runway and taxiways became longer and wider. The airport has one runway with reinforced concrete pavement. Passenger platform occupies a total of 8.9 ha; the airport has an apron for parking 14 planes. The helidrome occupies 7.2 ha and offers parking for 20 helicopters.

Novy Urengoy is sometimes called the gas capital of Russia. It has turned from a tiny settlement with 500 residents into the largest city of Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug with a population of around 117 thousand people. That's why a decision was made to conduct a large-scale modernisation of the airport. The agreement on port reconstruction between the Government of Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Airports of Regions Holding was made for 30 years, 3.5 of which are allocated to the investment stage. This is the first airport concession project in Russia.

Airport modernisation is set to be completed by the end of 2021. The project involves constructing a new, modern passenger terminal with a capacity of 1.45 million passengers per year (840 passengers per hour). For reference, right now Novy Urengoy Airport serves under 1 million passengers per year.

The new terminal will occupy 18 thousand square metres. The terminal will be equipped with two jet bridges, 12 check-in counters, and everything required for the convenience of passengers using the terminal, including people with disabilities.

At the same time, the entire airport infrastructure will be reconstructed, specifically the runway and taxiways. Another plan is to build a new apron. An important point is that construction works will not affect airport operations in any way: flights are going to continue as normal.

Total project investment is estimated at RUB 7.2 billion.

Novy Urengoy Airport may receive an international status in the future when passenger traffic reaches 1.5 million people per year. And that is totally realistic: the airport's reconstruction project already involves creating an international arrivals and departures sector.
