Baltic Shipyard to receive nearly RUB 22 bn for icebreaker construction

These funds will be used to continue the construction of three 2220 series icebreakers.

3 April 2024

The Government will allocate funds for Baltic Shipyard JSC, a part of JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation, to construct three icebreakers. The total funding allocated will be close to RUB 22 bn. This information is reported by ABN, citing a statement from Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

The funds will be used to continue the construction of three Project 22220 universal nuclear-powered icebreakers at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg. Currently, three icebreakers of this project are under construction at the shipyard: Leningrad (laid down in January 2024), Chukotka (laid down in December 2020) and Yakutia (laid down in May 2020). Additionally, in January, President Vladimir Putin announced the commencement of construction for another icebreaker of the same class, named Stalingrad.

Project 22220 icebreakers are designed for guiding ships in the Arctic in the Yenisei and Gulf of Ob areas, towing ships and other floating structures in ice and clear water, as well as for other tasks.
