According to RIA Novosti, Vladimir Putin has stated that the natural environment of the Arctic is very vulnerable, and all economic activities should be conducted with this in mind in order to minimise potential harm to the environment.

He highlighted the fact that Russia will be 'growing into' the Arctic and the Northern territories over the next decades, as these areas are very important for mining activities.

'At the same time, Arctic nature is also extremely vulnerable. Economic activities should, of course, be adapted according to the unique features of the Arctic and Russian North and minimise risks to the environment', said the President during a meeting with volunteers and finalists of the Russian Volunteer competition.
